Morning Glory: A brunch experience to remember

The Piazza della Famiglia in San Diego’s Little Italy is a 10,000-square-foot public square and marketplace that hospitality group CH Projects and designer Paul Basile has transformed, the second floor, into a Memphis-meets-Frank-Lloyd-Wright classic beauty.

Morning Glory is a breakfast-and-cocktail restaurant custom designed in house in San Diego and installed on-site. Basile’s 1980s inspiration showcases a palette of muted green, pops of pink, and terrazzo as well as nods to early Frank Lloyd Wright with walnut finishes, mixed metals, and signature-inspired architectural lighting and chandelier installations.

Above the pastry bar, a copper clad and backlit pink acrylic starburst welcomes guests. The main interior dining room showcases several intricate seating areas including a two-toned, dusty rose, custom leather bolster “lipstick booth,” and organic Douglas-fir-carved booth system ergonomically contoured to the body.

On the exterior, the high-polish, copper-shingled, chevron siding highlights the articulating animated window system that acts as a beacon on one of Little Italy’s most iconic corners. The pink-painted steel windows were developed with Basile’s sophisticated electronics system and dance throughout the day according to the level of available sunlight.
